Last Sunday, two celebrated figures in the Nigerian literary community went head to head in a bid to settle scores between fiction and non-fiction.
Victor Ehikhamenor is an artist and essayist. Toni Kan is a Lagos-based fiction writer. In what many are calling an unusual literary event, they challenged each other in a reading duel hosted at Rele, a Lagos art gallery.
Both writers defended their respective genre in a friendly reading match refereed by none other than Wana Udobang, herself a writer and filmmaker.
According to The Sole Adventurer blog, the event was well-attended. Ehikhamenor read from his 2012 work titled Excuse Me!, a series of commentaries documenting various aspects of Nigerian life. Kan read from Nights of the Creaking Bed and from an unpublished selection of stories titled Carnivorous City.
There were discussions about contemporary African writing in digital platforms. At the close of the event, a lucky winner took home an original artwork by Ehikhamenor. [Read full review of the event HERE.]
Kudos to the organizers for putting together such a creative and enriching literary event.
Here is a selection of photos of the event sourced from The Sole Adventurer.
Enjoy!
